The Building Blocks Project - Working Towards a Sustainable Future

About the project

In September 2007, Dudley CVS was awarded funding for 5 years from the Big Lottery BASIS programme to deliver the 'Building Blocks' project.

The project aims to enhance the support avaialble to the voluntary and community sector in the borough of Dudley. The project will support the development and sustainability of voluntary and community organsiations by:

  • Helping groups find more funding from different places
  • Helping groups to become more confident that their organisation is well run
  • Helping groups to plan well for the future
  • Linking new opportunities between voluntary organisations and commissioned services
  • Helping people look outside their organisation to see if they need to make any changes to their organisaiton to continue successfully

The project was developed as a result of recent government publications covering issues around the voluntary and community sector's sustainability, public service delivery and organisations being encouraged to move away from grant dependency and become more business like.

Funding Support
Intensive funding support is available to medium to large voluntary and community organisations as part of the project. Organisations can receive help in identifying what their funding needs are, developing strategies for finding the funding they need, sourcing potential funders and improving their financial management systems.

Funding Bulletin

To help voluntary and community organisations find out about how money can be raised a funding bulletin will be produced from September 2008.

The bulletin will include a wide range of information about funding options from grants, contracts, trading opportunities through to donations, as well as training opportunities.

Voluntary and Community Sector Good Practice Toolkit

Intensive organisational development support will be available to medium and large voluntary and community organisations from October 2008. This support will be provided to organisations through a 'VCS Good Practice Toolkit' which will help organisations become 'fit for purpose' to compete for public service contracts.

The toolkit is currently being developed by consultants 'Pulse Regeneration' through consultation with voluntary organisations and commissioners. The consultation processes include:

  • an advisory committee
  • questionnaires
  • networking events
  • one to one telephone interviews
  • a 'Testing the Toolkit' event

Commissioning in the borough of Dudley

A key part of the Building Blocks project is about helping to ensure that voluntary and community organisations looking to take on service level agreements are built on firm foundations and have the ability to bid for contracts.

Our Sustainability Officer will work with commissioning bodies and the voluntary and community sector to identify opportunities to be commissioned and also overcome problems and issues around public service delivery.
