Help keep the happiness flowing at Happy Hours

We couldn’t run the club without our wonderful helpers who are all volunteers.  Some of the helpers arrive at the hall at about 6:15pm to get the room ready for 7pm; this involves putting out the tables and chairs, sorting out what games to do that night, setting up all the music equipment for the disco and sorting out the raffle and tuck shop.  If anyone wants to come along and volunteer they don’t need any experience or qualifications – just a smiley 😊 face and a willingness to interact with the members and play games!!

What is Happy Hours?

It is run for adults in the local area with learning difficulties and disabilities and is run solely by volunteers.  We meet every Tuesday evening between 7pm – 9pm at St Thomas’ Church Hall in Market Street, Stourbridge.  We currently have 67 members and 20 helpers and are always receiving enquiries from potential new members.

Our normal Tuesday nights consist of playing games such as pool, giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, snakes and ladders and lots more.  Members also enjoy colouring and making crafts, doing jigsaws and generally socialising with their friends.  We also have a tuck shop and hold a raffle each week.  This normally takes place for just over an hour, then we pack everything away and the rest of the evening they dance the night away to a disco – this is the members favourite part!  We have recently invested in a karaoke machine and I think it is safe to say it is a huge success with members queueing up to have a go!  We have also purchased a magnetic dart board to try and add more variety to the activities they can take part in.

Some nights we will have a theme such as pizza nights, this Tuesday we have a fish and chip supper and we shall also be holding our very own X Factor night in a few weeks.  We also take the members out and every November we go to Cellars in Stourbridge for a curry night – this is a huge favourite with the members.  We are hoping to try and take some of the members on a canal trip to include a fish and chip supper.  We did this once before covid and they loved it; unfortunately we have been unable to do this since.

The members pay £2 per week subscriptions to come along and we charge a nominal amount for the tuck shop and the raffle.  We rely on this and on the generosity of carers of members for donations in order to keep the costs of nights out down.
