Free Loan Shark Talk: Delivered by The Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT).
The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) is a government think tank. They recently completed in-depth research into hidden debt and Illegal Money Lending. Their investigations concluded that in England, 1.08 million people are estimated to be using illegal money lenders (more commonly known as loan sharks).
CSJ recorded the physical and psychological abuse of those unable to meet repayments stretching indefinite into the future. More than 1 in 10 loan shark victims were found to have contemplated taking their own life at some point.
This session will teach you more about loan sharks:
– How they operate
– The tactics that they use
– The effects that they can have on borrowers, their families and communities
– How the England Illegal Money Lending Team is combatting the loan shark menace.
This talk is designed to raise people’s awareness of the dangers of loan sharks, explore the reasons why victims may not want to disclose information and cover issues such as GDPR and safeguarding. The session is 1 hour and will run 4 times in total, 2 ‘in person’ and 2 via MS teams (you only need to book onto one). The sessions are open to anyone working or volunteering in the Dudley Borough.
