Challenge Academy utilizes outdoor learning and adventure to support young people in developing mental toughness and emotional resilience. Its ethos focuses on facilitating behaviour change and providing opportunities for individuals to step outside their comfort zones. Through experiential learning and mindful reflection, participants are empowered to recognize and apply their inner resources in ways that translate to everyday life.
The academy’s programs emphasize confidence, commitment, control, and challenge, all within a woodland environment that fosters a connection to nature and overall well-being. These programs incorporate a mix of ground-based challenges from the Bags of Character resource, alongside high ropes, climbing, and nets courses. Bags of Character is designed to help participants explore their abilities in problem-solving, team leadership, communication, and teamwork.
Each course is progressive and tailored to the specific needs of the group, with a focus on areas such as confidence building, employability, or trust. Programs accommodate up to 10 young people and run for four sessions, each lasting four hours. Challenge Academy works with disadvantaged individuals aged 16-25 from across the Black Country.
Accredited as an Institute of Outdoor Learning and holding the Adventure Mark, Challenge Academy ensures high standards in outdoor education. The Branching Out program is currently funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, allowing groups to access it free of charge.
