Governors for Schools finds, places and supports skilled volunteers as governors and trustees on school boards.  They support schools across Dudley and beyond to run effectively by finding high calibre governors to bring their skills and expertise to the table – and improve education for children.

Schools do incredible things to educate young people and help them become compassionate and well-rounded citizens in Dudley. However, they can’t do this job alone. School governors help to shape school policies and aims, allowing teachers to focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences. Effective governance can positively impact a child’s experience of education. Governors offer strategic guidance, rather than getting involved in the operational aspects of a school. This involves working with other board members to plan the school’s strategic direction, overseeing the school’s financial performance, ensuring money is well-spent and holding the headteacher or school leadership to account.

Although becoming a governor requires drive and commitment, you’ll enjoy many professional and personal rewards, including career development opportunities and the chance to support young people’s futures. You don’t need to be a parent or education expert to volunteer as a governor. Schools require a combination of hard and soft skills to ensure their boards operate effectively. Whether you’re an experienced professional or embarking on the first stages of your career, they’ll work hard to match you with an appropriate school – anyone’s voice can contribute change to a board.

The majority of Governors for Schools volunteers are first-time governors without any previous education experience. Often, this outside perspective can drive effective change in schools. However, joining a board can feel daunting. They’ve developed eLearning modules on a number of topics to help you get up to speed on key elements of the role. Regular webinars are also held so you can continue your learning and have the opportunity to ask questions. You’ll be supported each step of the way.
