The Trust’s history goes back to 1963 when the Dudley Canal Tunnel Preservation Society was formed to protect the tunnel, and in particular to oppose the Railway plans to block the Tipton Portal with an embankment. In 1970 the Society became the Dudley Canal Trust. Today they cater for over 80,000 passengers per year and any trading surplus is used to help maintain the Tunnel and Dudley Canal and its environment. The protection of the environment is where they are calling on extra hands to help them clean up our canals as part of the Big Help Out for the Coronation Weekend. Over 14 million pieces of plastic alone end up in our waterways each year leading to damage to habitats and endangering our wildlife. They are asking you to join their Canal Clean up as they head out on the open water aboard one of thier boats for a morning collecting rubbish and abandoned treasures littering our canal. Departing at 10am from the Portal Building, Birmingham New Rd, Dudley DY1 4SB, you will spend 3 hours with rubbish bag and net in hand helping to clean up our waterways, returning at 1pm. This is a one off event on Monday 8th May 2023. This event is free to attend however, spaces are limited. If you are interested please email@DudleyCVS
