Public Health, Dudley Council, is currently undertaking a health needs assessment on smoking cessation and tobacco control in Dudley borough. Smoking remains a significant preventable cause of ill health, disability and premature mortality. The current prevalence of smoking in Dudley is 11.7% but in some population groups prevalence is over 20% demonstrating inequalities. There is a national target to reduce the prevalence of smoking to 5% of population by 2030 showing the challenge we have. There is also other work focusing on smokefree generation and the new Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026.
The health needs assessment is therefore timely and necessary as it will provide a comprehensive assessment of smoking cessation and tobacco control in Dudley borough. It aims to develop a detailed understanding of the current picture, the impact on health and wellbeing, health inequalities and the effectiveness of existing services and interventions. The assessment will identify and target resources to address unmet need, highlight opportunities for improvement and support partnership working and system wide transformation.
An in-person engagement event is being held on Thursday 17th September, 10am – 1pm to gather stakeholder insights. Discussions will help inform the service mapping, pathways, data, insights, strengths, enablers, barriers and blockages.
